Stay on target Basic pumpkin carving might involve jack-o’-lantern faces, but NASA engineers are taking their gourd artwork to the next level.Today, NASA held its unofficial pumpkin carving contest at its Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The fun event, which encourages engineers to work together and develop extreme pumpkin creations, is held annually before Halloween. Over the past seven years, engineers have transformed average gourds into twinkling UFOs, celestial pirate ships, and parachute-suspended objects.Photo Credit: NASA/JPL-CaltechUnlike other competitions, NASA’s pumpkin carving contest requires planning, developing, and competing off the clock. The purpose of these rules is to get engineers’ creative juices flowing and encourage cooperation-building initiatives along the way. Entries are submitted by teams that put all hands on deck before the big day.AdChoices广告Photo Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech“Everyone gets so excited about this competition that has no prize other than bragging rights,” said Iona Brockie, an engineer who previously helped build a cow-abduction pumpkin for the competition. “It’s fun to see everybody bring the same kind of crazy energy that they do to making the flight projects to something as simple as a pumpkin carving contest.”This year, participating teams served up some of the funniest pumpkin creations.
