first_imgNews Organisation News China: Political commentator sentenced to eight months in prison 05.06.2002The Communist Party’s media control department has asked sports editors of the main Chinese publications to not come down too hard on the Chinese football team, which was beaten 2-0 by Costa Rica in the World Cup. Several sports journalists told the Reuters press agency that their instructions were clear: they were “not to criticize the team, to not anger fans”.________________________________________________________________03.06.2002With commemorations underway for the thirteenth anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the Chinese football team kicks off its participation in the World Cup. Reporters Without Borders (RSF – Reporters Sans Frontières) wants to heighten public awareness of the human rights situation in China and pay homage to the thousands of people killed by the Chinese army in June 1989. The organisation makes a reminder that at least two hundred political prisoners, including journalists, are still languishing in prison for having called for democracy in China, in 1989.At least four journalists are in prison for having taken part in the Beijing Spring of 1989 or for having criticised the crimes committed by security forces against demonstrators in clandestine publications. The four are Yu Dongyue, art critic with Liuyang News, arrested on 23 May 1989 and sentenced to twenty years in jail, Hu Liping, a journalist with the Beijing Daily, arrested on 7 April 1990 and sentenced to ten years in jail, Chen Yanbin, co-director of the clandestine magazine Tielu, arrested at the end of 1990 and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment, and Zhang Yafei, co-director of the clandestine magazine Tielu, arrested in September 1990 and sentenced to eleven years in jail.Thirteen years later, it is still illegal to talk openly about the events of June 1989 and the Chinese authorities repress those who call for justice for the students and workers killed in Beijing. For example, the cyber-dissident Huang Qi, whose web site contained information in Chinese on the Tiananmen Square massacre, has been in prison since March 2000. There has been no news of him for several months.Reporters Without Borders has no intention of tarnishing the world’s greatest football event. It’s aim is to make a reminder that in China, even during the World Cup, journalist and people who think differently are jailed, tortured and censored. Two days before the match against Costa Rica, news came through that two militants belonging to the Chinese Democratic Party (which is banned) had been sentenced to ten and eleven years in prison. Two members of illegal Christian churches were also arrested by the police as a “preventive measure against commemorations” of 4 June 1989. Of employed individuals who work remotely at least one day a week, 23% said they were more likely to consider moving because of the pandemic, as only 13% of employed people who always work at their employer’s location said the same.Zillow economists expect 17.2% more home sales this year than in 2020.“As the pandemic subsides and the economy begins to recover, lowered health risks and renewed homeowner financial confidence should bring more sellers to the market,” said Zillow Economist Arpita Chakravorty. “That increased inventory would ease buyer competition that has driven prices higher during the pandemic, but expect a steady pace of home value growth to persist into the near future. Mortgage rates have risen some but are still low by historical standards, adding to people’s purchasing power and helping to keep competition for homes revved up.”Pandemic-related job loss has contributed to a number of the nation’s renters being forced to sit on the sidelines in a buyer’s market. Federal actions extending eviction and foreclosure moratoria have been extended several times, as estimated 2.3 million Americans are currently in forbearance plans according to the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA). Zillow panelists believe a large majority (85%) of cash-strapped renters will either find ways to remain in their current home or will avoid eviction by moving to a less-expensive home. Still, panelists said they expect some 15% of currently distressed renters will ultimately be evicted, representing millions of households. In terms of the ideal home that shoppers seek, the survey found that Americans prefer a 2,000-square-foot home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms—the same as when surveyed a year ago.And while the ideal home has not changed, the number of homes has dried up as the demand has far exceeded the supply nationwide. A majority of ZHPE panelists (53%) expect home inventory to grow again this year, likely during the second half of 2021. An increase in existing-homes being listed for sale is expected to be the biggest factor in the reversal, with 38% of panelists saying this will factor as a catalyst for this growth in inventory.”As the economy continues to recover, more potential sellers will enter the market as they gain confidence in their employment,” said Samer Kuraishi, President and Founder at The ONE Street Company in Washington, D.C. “It’s been tough on homeowners who want to sell but might have lost their job, or cannot work remotely. Increased employment stability will only raise confidence and push people off the sidelines. While we have optimism about April and the summer, our work with clients will remain the same: arm, educate, and empower them to learn the market and understand the road ahead.”Strong competition for the short supply available forced prices upward last year, as the typical U.S. home appreciated by more than $20,000 in 2020. Even with an expectation for more inventory to help meet buyer demand, ZHPE panelists on average expect home prices to grow 6.2% in 2021—a full two percentage points higher than when they were surveyed in Q4 2020—as several panelists call for double-digit price growth this year.“In the wake of last year’s heady home equity gains, these new projections indicate that the aggregate value of homes across the country will increase by another $2 trillion in 2021,” said Terry Loebs, founder of Pulsenomics. “This is great news for existing homeowners, but even with a robust economic rebound in the coming months affordability will likely remain a challenge for many aspirational renters looking to move into homeownership this year.”Click here to read more about the Q1 2021 Zillow Home Price Expectations (ZHPE) survey. first_imgWalters could head back to OKC on Tuesday when the Dodgers plan to activate Joc Pederson from the DL. Pederson is with the OKC Dodgers this weekend on a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment.Kershaw, Wood throwAs scheduled, injured left-handers Clayton Kershaw and Alex Wood threw to hitters from Class-A Rancho Cucamonga in a simulated-game setting Saturday at Dodger Stadium.Kershaw threw approximately 60 pitches and Wood 40 during the session which “went well,” according to the reports Roberts received. If Kershaw comes out of the workout feeling fine, the only thing left is “figuring out what day we can work him into our rotation,” Roberts said. That could come as soon as Thursday in Washington or Friday in St. Louis.A number of factors will be weighed in making that decision, Roberts said. But “with a guy like Clayton, yeah, you defer to him. He’s earned that.”Roberts said Wood will throw a bullpen session and then face hitters again next week. Brett Anderson is scheduled to throw to hitters for the first time since his surgery either Sunday or Monday.Thompson outThompson had been receiving treatment on his back for some time before going on the DL Saturday.“He just couldn’t be the player he was,” Roberts said. “You’re talking about the back. With what we have left in the season, we didn’t want to put him in harm’s way. So we felt that with the opportunity to have some days back dated and not lose too many games on the calendar it just made sense for us, to let Trayce get back to 100 percent.”Thompson has hit .189 since June 1 with only 11 hits in his past 77 at-bats (.143). He will be eligible to return on July 26.Ethier still healingJust short of four months after he fouled a ball off his right shin during a spring training game, the spiral fracture in Andre Ethier’s tibia is still not fully healed.Ethier underwent another scan on the injured tibia Friday in hopes of getting clearance to increase his workout activities with an eye towards rejoining the Dodgers in mid-August. That is on hold now after the scan showed “the fracture has not completely healed,” according to Roberts.Roberts said the plan now is for Ethier to continue his workouts but “ramp up” as much as he can, based on how much pain it causes him. There is no timetable for when he might be able to play in games as part of a minor-league injury-rehabilitation assignment, let alone rejoin the Dodgers.“It’s healed enough where we feel Andre, to his tolerance, can continue to progress with baseball activity,” Roberts said. “I think at this point we’re going to monitor him but ramp him up and see where it takes us.”Ethier has been taking batting practice and playing catch. But his running has been limited in order to avoid jarring the bone as it healed. The issue now is not a concern for re-injury but Ethier’s comfort level, Roberts said.“I think it’ll be healed at some point,” Roberts said. “But if you’re looking at this season — to hope it’s going to be pain free is something that’s maybe a little too optimistic. Obviously Andre wants to be with us and he’s going to do everything he can to be back.”Roberts said the Dodgers still expect Ethier to play for them some time this season. “It’s the hitting coach (in OKC), Shawn Wooten,” said Walters who was acquired by the Dodgers in April. “He just kind of made fun of me that I was raw and had no idea how to repeat a swing. Then he kind of worked with me mechanically and I have an idea of what I’m doing now. Consistency is the name of the game and that’s kind of where I’ve been the last four or five weeks, pretty consistent.”Walters said Wooten told him “you hit a ball 450 (feet) or whatever then completely miss one in batting practice.”“He said, ‘You have no idea what you’re doing?’” Walters said. “’No, I have no idea.’“I need that. I can take constructive criticism. I didn’t really have that with some other clubs. I was fairly new, young. But that’s something I need. Coming over here has kind of been a blessing in disguise, especially with Shawn.”Walters has played seven positions in Triple-A this year — all four infield spots, left field, center field and even pitcher (for part of an inning) — and is a switch hitter. With the Dodgers carrying eight relievers, that versatility is valuable, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. Maybe it just took being insulted for Zach Walters to unlock the potential three previous organizations have seen in him.Walters was promoted from Triple-A by the Dodgers on Saturday, taking the place of outfielder Trayce Thompson who went on the DL with lower back irritation.Walters has been to the majors before with the Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians (after originally being drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks). He hit .182 in a combined 82 games during those brief big-league visits while spending parts of the past five seasons in Triple-A.But he has never had a run of success quite like he has had for the OKC Dodgers over the past six weeks. Since June 1, Walters hit .349 with a 984 OPS, 11 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 28 RBIs and 29 runs scored in 39 games.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
